Five thousand assault rifles, a million rounds of ammunition and 20 army trucks from the Russian government arrived in Manila on Friday.

The donations were carried by three Russian warships, including two anti-submarine vessels.

The "gift" was a part of a new defense relationship between the countries.

It was the third port visit this year by Russian warships as part of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s moves to engage closely with Moscow, an arch-rival of Manila’s former colonial master and closest defense ally, the United States.

According to Eduard Mikhailov, deputy commander of Russia’s Pacific Fleet flotilla, “We would do our best to make this port call a significant contribution indicating friendly ties and relations between two nations in the interest of security and stability in this region."

Duterte earlier reported that the Russians will give 5,000 Kalashnikov rifles as to aid PH combat terrorism.

This is the third visit of the Russians after Duterte's attempt to build relations.

Next week,  Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu who will be attending a regional defense meeting, along with his US counterpart, Jim Mattis.

The two countries are to sign a security deal on military logistics next week.
