A netizen on Facebook lambasted Senator Bam Aquino after the latter commented on the recent refusal of the Philippines to accept foreign aid from the European Union.
Aquino through his Twitter account said, "If we are refusing aid because we are self-sufficient, why are we then planning to burden our country men with more taxes?"
Co rebutted the Senator, saying that self-sufficiency is not implicative of a freeedom of taxation. He cited as examples the United States of America and Japan, both of which are self-sufficient yet impose taxes on their citizens.
"BAM, if we turn your logic on its head, WHY DID THE RP GOVERNMENT COLLECT TAXES FROM ITS CITIZENS WHEN IT WAS RECEIVING AIDS AND GRANTS FROM THE EUROPEAN UNION?" he said.
Co clarified that taxation is not a token of insufficiency or inadequacy, nor should taxation and aid be considered mutually exclusive.
"You try to look like Ninoy, but man, Bam, you're no Ninoy," he said.
"Kung sabagay, uso naman sa inyo ngayon ang "It doesn't really have to be true, it just has to look like it," he added hitting the Liberal Party.
President Rodrigo Duterte has recently refused to accept aid from teh European Union, despite just accepting aid from China.
Duterte has expressed his dismay at the EU after it has discouraged him from his drug war, from the revival of death penalty and the release if detained Senator Leila de Lima.
EU two months ago, threatened to pull out aid from the Philippines, but has now been refused by the country.
