UP journalism prof: UP students should not flaunt their ID's and "show off"
University of the Philippines Diliman Associate Professor of Journalism Danilo Arao in his social media accounts encouraged UP students not to wear their ID's outside of the campus as it would be  a form of "showing off".

The professor said that their maroon paraphernalia should be used only when required as it is "NOT school pride to wear those lanyards at malls and coffee shops, or even while riding the jeep, bus and LRT."

"There is no need to symbolically tell the whole world that you're studying at the country's national university. If you want to demonstrate school pride, study the university's history and visit a marginalized community."

UP students have reacted negatively to the post, question why a stigma of showing off is given to UP students wearing their ID's and not students of other universities who wear their complete uniforms.

"I.D. na nga lang meron kami eh," commented a student at the post.

The issue surrfaced after students were fired at by netizens and supporters of President Rodrigo Duterte after they criticized the university's offer of giving the president an honorary degree.

The Honoris Causa has been offered to all presidents since Manuel Quezon.

To date , only Joseph Estrada and Gloria Arroyo have declined to receive it. Duterte has also recently declined the offer, saying he is not interested in an award for doing his job.
