'UP is not just for rich oligarchs, it's for everyone', says Miriam Santiago's younger sister
Atty Paula Defensor Knack, sister of late Senator Miriam Santiago defended President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday on the advent of a debate on whether or not he deserves the honorary doctorate degree offered to him by the University of the Philippines.

The Honoris Causa is an award offered to elected heads of states and UP has been giving it to presidents since the time of Manuel Quezon.

Defensor Knack said that it would be unfair to Duterte as all heads of states were given the degree, including the most corrupt.

She said that even former Presidents Corazon and Benigno Aquino were given the award despite their corruption, plunder and human rights atrocities.

Even Fidel Ramos, whom she called a cheater from hell, even accepted the degree.

She said that Duterte did not even ask for the degree.

"He is not from UP. Will UP graduates act arrogantly again?"

"I don't get it," she said, "the dictator Marcos is our alumni too, whom ypu strongly condemn. So what's the criteria now?"

She urged UP students to be fair. UP is not just for rich oligarchs but for everyone.

UP students she said are receiving an education paid for by taxpayer money.

"Yet some of us act like we own people's taxes," the UP alumnus said.
