Bishops call Gina Lopez 'true secretary for protection of environment'
Catholic support for Gina Lopez' cause to be confirmed as Department of Environment and Natural Resources Secretary got stronger as more Bishops support her.
Bishops from Samar island came to the side of Lopez on March 1st.
Bishops Isabelo Abarquez of Calbayog, Crispin Varquez of Borongan, and Emmanuel Trance of Catarman said Lopez deserves a chance to lead the agency.
They called Lopez the "true secretary for the protection of our environment”.
They said Lopez helped a lot of communities affected by mining in Samar alone.
The prelates made the statement after a meeting of the Samar Island Partnership for Peace and Development (SIPPAD) held in Catarman, Northern Samar last week.
SIPPAD is composed of the Church, local government units, government agencies, civil society groups, peoples’ organizations, the academe, youth, women, and other sectors.
Last month, Lopez shut down 23 mines, composed mostly of producers of nickel and those located in functional watersheds.
Lopez said she was "pushing for justice" and would not allow businesses that harm the environment.
President Rodrigo Duterte came to the dfense of the Secretary saying that he too would rather protect the environment than gain mining revenue reaching 70 million.
At least three mining firms operating in Homonhon Island in Guiuan, Eastern Samar were among those ordered to close their operations.
To date, small scale chromite mining are also operating in the towns of Salcedo, Llorente, Gen. McArthur, Quinapondan, Hernani, and Llorente, all in Eastern Samar.
