Online petition: ‘Confirm Lopez as DENR sec’
After the Commission on Appointments confirmed Vitaliano Aguirre as the secretary of justice, environment advocate Gina Lopez is next to face the CA for her appointment as the secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
In support of Lopez’ appointment is non-government organization Green Thumb Coalition who has launched an online petition campaign demanding the CA to immediately confirm Lopez. According to the petition via Change.Org, Lopez’ “track record in protecting the environment and ending the suffering of the poor and vulnerable sectors of our society for the past two decades is unprecedented.”
Known for her anti-mining advocacies, Lopez considers herself as a “lover of the environment”. She led Bantay Kalikasan in its reforestation efforts around La Mesa Dam, the main energy and water source for Metro Manila.
Furthermore, the petition says that Lopez helped ordinary Filipinos in taking care the country’s natural treasure. This move, the petition says, “that proves Lopez’ causes are aligned with the President’s commitment to malasakit, pagbabago, at kaunlaran.”
In early February 2016, the Lopez-led DENR ordered the closure of at least 23 mining corporations and companies spread throughout the country for numerous violations.
“We have been working with Sec. Gina for years, even before her appointment, and we continue to stand firm by her side in this crucial fight for the environment and for future generation of Filipinos,” the petition ended.
One of those who signed the petition is former local government secretary Raffy Alunan.
