In an announcement released on February 2, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources ordered the closing down of 23 mining companies in several areas in the country.

Majority of those ordered for closure include mining areas that are near watershed areas. Included in the list are Ore Asia Mining and Development Corporation and Benguet Corporation, two of the oldest mining companies in the country.

The list includes the following companies according to their announcement:

-Benguet Corporation
-Ore Asia Mining and Development
-BenguetCorp Nickel Mines Incorporated
-BenguetCorp Nickel Mines Incorporated
-Eramen Minerals Incorporated
-LNL Archipelago Minerals Incorporated
-Zambales Diversified Metals Corporation
-Mt Sinai Mining Exploration and Development Corporation
-Emir Minerals Corporation
-TechIron Mineral Resources Incorporated
-AAMPHIL Natural Resources Exploration
-Oriental Synergy Mining Corporation
-SinoSteel Philippines HY Mining Corporation
-Kromico, Incorporated
-Oriental Vision Mining Philippines Corporation
-Wellex Mining Corporation
-Libjo Mining Corporation
-ADNAMA Mining Resources Corporation
-Claver Mineral Development Corporation
-Hinatuan Mining Corporation
-CTP Construction and Mining Corporation
-Carrascal Nickel Corporation
-Marcventures Mining and Development Corporation
-Platinum Group Metals Corporation


The DENR insisted that the companies stop operation until their appeals are approved. The companies are still allowed to file appeals to the Office of the President.

“This closure becomes final when the President says it is,” disclosed DENR Secretary Gina Lopez who stressed the importance of waters in the country. Lopez also stated that green economies actually yield more jobs.
