Venecia said that the first flaw of Duterte's haters is that they loathe the man so much, they can't see that he actually has a lot of good programs and plans for the middle class.

The professor said that unlike United States President Donald Trump who has no redeeming quality, Duterte is admired and loved because he has traits many Filipino deem acceptable.

She questioned why many women still admire the man despite his image as a man who views them as objects?

"Well, unlike Trump, who vows to defund Planned Parenthood and repeal Obamacare - issues that women of all colors care about - Duterte just signed an executive order funding the RH Law and allotted P2B for free medicines, not to mention free tuition in SUCs and tax reform that will tax the rich more and ease the tax burden of the middle class," she said.

Venecia said this is why Duterte remains immensely popular unlike Trump.

"Principled protest against Duterte's seeming disregard for human rights and due process must continue, yes, but efforts at comparing him to Trump is counterproductive," she said.
