President Rodrigo Duterte did not take a break on Christmas day, but spent it with bombing victims, according to Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel "Manny" Fantin Piñol.
In Piñol's Facebook account, he said that the President sapent the day in Pesante Community Hospital in North Cotabato, where people suffered from a bombing attack in front of a Ctholic Church.
The Agriculture Secretary quoted Duterte as saying, "I just want to give them comfort and boost their spirits,".
He said the President gave away cash assistance to the victims.
"The President's visit to a bombing scene was not expected but it did not come as a surprise. This was vintage Duterte." Piñol said.
He said Duterte spent the 24th with children suffering from cancer in the Southern Medical Center (SPMC) in Davao City.
Pinol, who served as North Cotabato governor for nine yeaes was informed that many more would have been victimized were it not for the long homily of the priest, criticizing Duterte's drug war.
"Gusto na naming lumabas kasi mahaba ang sermon nya na ina-atake si President Duterte. Pero nahiya lang kami,' " said one churchgoer, according to Piñol.
"The long sermon prevented churchgoers from leaving the church earlier where they would be passing through the very place where the grenade was lobbed and exploded." he said.
He said Duterte joked, saying the incident was "drug-related".
"It is not always that the President visits a town which has just been bombed and most of all, not on Christmas Day." Pinol said.
