Ombudsman probes Duterte despite his immunity from suit

Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales announced that she was to investigate President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.

The President is to face charges of plunder.

“Under the law, even if a person has immunity or even if he’s impeachable, you still continue the investigation for purposes of determining whether there is misconduct,” she said.

Senator Antonnio Trillanes IV filed the case on May and accused Duterte of  paying P708 million to 11,000 ghost employees in 2014 in Davao City when he was still mayor.


“We don’t discount any possibility that we’ll spare him or indict him. There are many possibilities,” Morales said.

The ombudsman had herself inhibited from the case since she is the aunt of Duterte's son in law, Mans Carpio, husband of Sara Duterte.
