In principle, President Rodrigo Duterte is akin to the late South African President Nelson Mandela, who vouched against United States of America's policies.
Mandela went against US imperialism and announced his support for Palestine Liberation Organization leader Yasser Arafat, Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and Cuban President Fidel Castro despite being perceived as enemies of America.
Former Interior and Local Government Secretary Rafael Alunan shared Mandela's interview on his Facebook page, saying that it showcases what "national interest" and "independent policy" means.
The video was shot in 1990, where Mandela said that these three world leaders have supported South Africa’s struggle “to the hilt” and saw no problem with their approach to human rights.
“One of the mistakes which some political analysts make is to think their enemies should be our enemies. Our attitude towards any country is determined by the attitude of that country to our struggle,” Mandela said.
“There is no reason whatsoever why we should have any hesitation about hailing their commitment to human rights as they’re being demanded in South Africa… They do not support only in rhetoric; they are placing resources at our disposal for us to win the struggle,” he added.
