President Rodrigo Duterte's visit to China next week is already set. At least 400 businessmen have signed up to join Pres. Duterte’s trip, according to Francis Chua, chair emeritus of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Business tycoons namely Manuel V. Pangilinan of Metro Pacific and PLDT Inc., Ramon S. Ang of the San Miguel group, Lucio Tan and son Michael Tan of the Lucio Tan group, Hans Sy of the SM group, Carlos Chan of the Oishi group, Alfredo Yao of the Zest-O group and Henry Lim Bon Liong of the Sterling Group of companies are among those who are joining the state visit to China.
He will not only be meeting top Chinese officials and signing agreements when he goes to China. According to a report of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Beijing University will also give an honorary doctorate on Duterte.
It will be the first time that a 'degree honoris causa' will be conferred on Duterte, who has admitted to having an average performance in school.
The President has said he was contented with getting barely passing grades when he was a student.
An honorary degree is an academic degree for which a university (or other degree-awarding institution) has waived the usual requirements, such as matriculation, residence, a dissertation and the passing of comprehensive examinations.
The degree is being given to philanthropists, musicians, politicians, authors and scientists often receive acknowledgment for their exemplary accomplishments and achievements that serve a greater good.
The conferment of a honorary doctorate on Duterte comes at a time when the Philippines’ relationship with China is improving despite the dispute over the South China Sea.
