The rookie senator claims that the country needs a stronger foreign policy despite the progress of the Duterte administration.

“Filipinos will understand his language, but the entire world might not, and that will affect all of us,” he said.

He said balance was needed, despite Duterte's reasonable plan to set an independent policy for the country.

He said foreign support should be welcome, as the country and its economy is "not that big."

He said all the negative publicity must be managed.

The senator also claimed that the high approval rating is an affirmation that Duterte is fulfilling his campaign promises.

Gatchalian however, stressed that he is against the extrajudicial killings linked with Duterte's drug war.

On the bright side, the senator commended Duterte's transparency from his first day in office. He pointed out that the president did not pretend that he could fix all of the country's problems.

“We are seeing a lot of concrete results on the ground when it comes to the peace and order situation of the country, and the most important to me is the opinion of the ordinary Filipino,” Gatchalian said.

In a survey by the Social Weather Station, 76 percent of the respondents were satisfied with the ongoing war against drugs, while only 8 percent were dissatisfied.

The survey revealed that 83 percent mentioned that the war did not discriminate by class.
