P7.5M party drugs stopped at post office
After being detected by the K9 unit of the Bureau of Customs Enforcement Group, around 5,000 tablets of ecstasy amounting to P7.5 million and five amphetamine blocks were intercepted at the Manila Central Post Office last July and were presented by the BOC yesterday.
“Pinatest doon sa K9 and inupuan na noong aso so nag-positive. We get samples, pinatest and the chemical analysis showed na illegal drugs siya,” Deputy Commissioner Arnel Alcaraz said.
Alcaraz also said that the illegal drugs were inside five parcers consigned to Don Arnold and Martin Domingo. The said parcels were originally declared as toys from the Netherlands, but he noted that they have received information regarding the shipment but didn’t disclose further.
According to the BOC, authorities were waiting for Arnold and Domingo to claim the parcels but they did not show up, therefore they were not arrested. Alcaraz said that there are more operations and investigations that are being carried out by the BOC and PDEA.
The modus of drug syndicates according to the Customs official is that they buy illegal drugs online using fake identities, using bitcoins as payment, and then using the Philippine Postal (Philost) service for the transit of the parcels.
“Lahat ng parcel natin via airmail, bumabagsak sa central mail exchange sa airport, then ipapadala yan sa respective post offices kung saan naka-consign,” Alcaraz explained.
The shipment is suspected to be for young, high-end drug users, according to PDEA Assistant Regional Director Chritian Frivaldo.
Alcaraz explained that the five blocks of amphetamine can be turned into tens of thousands of emphetamine that can be sold, since only 0.1 gram of it is needed to make ecstasy.
However, Frivaldo said that they cannot be sure yet if the interception is linked with the arrested pharmacist in Mandaluyong. “We are trying to exhaust all information so we can establish connections but for now, we can’t really disclose anything because it is still an ongoing investigation. ASCS
