Convicted
Chinese drug lord Tony Co was killed while four other inmates were wounded
during a riot that ensued during a shabu session inside the New Bilibid Prison.
Co was
pronounced dead on arrival at the nearby Medical Center Muntinlupa (MCM).
Meanwhile, the wounded inmates Jaybee Sebastian, Peter Co, Vicente Sy, and
former Chief Insp. Clarence Dongail were stabbed.
Peter Co
was critically wounded, while the rest are in stable condition as declared by
Dr. Uriel Halum. They are heavily guarded by Special Action Force (SAF)
commandos.
According
to Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre, Tony Co and the other Chinese inmates
were having a “shabu” session in their cell in Building 14 at 7 am when Dongail
told them not to use the substance because they will all get in trouble. That
prompted the riot.
Aguirre did
not disclose how they were able to get their hands on the illegal drugs and
knife since their building was considered to be the most secured.
Meanwhile,
according to Halum, Sebastian and Co received multiple stab wounds in their
chest area and the wounds were “meant to kill”.
Sebastian’s
lawyer has requested that his client be transferred to Asian Medical Center but
Halum insisted that MCM also has the facilities and personnel.
Bureau of
Corrections officer in charge Rolando Asuncion dismissed the word that the riot
was a ploy to stop Sebastian from testifying on the probe on illegal drug
activities in the penitentiary. “Riots are usual in prisons that lack quality
facilities and personnel, and not properly segregated inmates. Unless those
would be improved, riots such as these will happen,” he said.
