Amidst the recent Davao bombing and the intensified war on drugs in the country, President Rodrigo Duterte is set to visit Vientiane, Laos today. He will attend the 49th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Leaders Summit, and also accept the chairmanship of the regional grouping for 2017.
According to Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto Yasay Jr., the president will depart from Davao at 4:40 this afternoon. He will proceed directly to Vientiane, along with his party in a chartered Philippine Airlines flight.
For his first trip abroad, foyer honors will be accorded to him.
The president recently cancelled his two-day state visit to Brunei in the wake of the Davao bombing that killed 15 people and injured 71.
During his stay in Laos, he is expected to hold bilateral talks especially with the United States President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Yasay emphasized the importance of Duterte’s attendance, as he would be receiving the chairmanship of the group from Laos. “All these ASEAN meetings will be held here in the country next year. That is why the Office of the President has been allocated a huge budget for hosting the summit next year,” Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez explained.
Duterte will also proceed to Jakarta, Indonesia on September 8 for a state visit, where he will meet with Indonesian president Joko Widodo and the Filipino community. He will return to the country on September 9. ASCS
