CBCP criticizes Duterte’s plea for extension: 'too many excuses'

Manila Auxillary Bishop Broderick Pabillo criticized President Rodrigo Duterte for asking to extend the government’s campaign against illegal drugs for another six months, which was initially only until December as promised.

According to Pabillo, his call for extension was already an admission that his strategy in tackling illegal drugs in the country is ineffective. He said that it also meant he is extending his presidency because he promised to step down if the campaign fails.

“In the campaign, he categorically said the drug problem would be solved in six months or he would step down. But he is not a man of one word. His words cannot be trusted and he gives a lot of excuses,” he insisted.


He also claimed that Duterte made people believe. “Can he not see that his method is not effective?”

Pabillo called on to the government to direct its focus on the provision of rehabilitation and anti-poverty programs to drug dependents, as well as corruption. These measures, he said, would uproot the deep-seated causes of drug use.

“It should be rehabilitation and implement a stronger anti-poverty campaign. He should also root out corruption in the police and the government. Where are the generals and the mayors who have been punished? Are there any?”

Both parties, the government and the Catholic Church, have long been at odds over the former’s methods on dealing with drugs and crime. ASCS
