The Department of Justice has received information from two witnesses that over P300 million is missing from the total cash seized from the New Bilibid Prison during a raid in December 2014.
According to Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II, an inmate and an intelligence officer denied reports that only P1.6 million was seized during the raid in the maximum security compound.
Aguirre said that the witnesses were present during the raid, which was led by then Justice secretary and now senator Leila de Lima. The money was definitely raised from illegal-drug trade inside the prison, he confirmed.
“They were able to get more than P300 million in that particular raid. Ang dineclare lang nila ay P1.6 million,” Aguirre said.
De Lima relocated 19 alleged drug lords from the NBP to the NBI in Manila after the said raid. This was later on criticized by inmates as a ploy to let convicted kidnapper Jaybee Sebastian monopolize the drug trade inside the Bilibid.
The funds raised from the drug trade by Sebastian is said to have been used for De Lima’s senatorial run.
