UN condemns drug-related killings in PH
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has expressed concern over the rising number of killings of drug personalities in the Philippines.
According to UNDOC Executive Director Yury Fedotov’s statement on Wednesday, he joins UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s condemnation of the “apparent endorsement” of extrajudicial killings in the country, calling it “a breach of fundamental rights and freedoms”.
Fedotov said that the rise in killings goes against the current provisions of the international drug conventions.
“Such responses contravene the provisions of the international drug control conventions, do not serve the cause of justice, and will not help to ensure that ‘all people can live in health, dignity and peace, with security and prosperity,’ as agreed by governments in the outcome document approved at the UN General Assembly special session on the world drug problem,” he said.
Fredotov also said that the UN will help the Philippine government in its plan to put drug personalities to justice as long as the methods are grounded on international conventions and agreements, he also calls for “balanced, people-centered, evidence- and rights-based approaches to drug control.”
“UNODC stands ready to further engage with the Philippines and all countries to bring drug traffickers to justice with the appropriate legal safeguards in line with international standards and norms, and promote prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and reintegration approaches based in evidence, science, public health and human rights,” he said.
The UNODC released the statement after the International Drug Policy Consortium, a network of non-governmental organizations (NGO), asked both the UNODC and the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) to condemn the drug-related killings in the Philippines.
According to the records of the Philippine National Police, from the time Duterte sat as president until August 1, 402 drug personalities have been killed during legitimate anti-illegal drug operations while 5,418 have been arrested. MJM
