American presidential candidate Donald Trump, famously known for his staunch racism, has included the Philippines among ‘terrorist nations’ whose citizens should be denied entry to the United States.
“We are letting people come in from terrorist nations that shouldn’t be allowed because you can’t vet them. You have no idea who they are. This could be the great Trojan horse of all time,” Trump said during his anti-immigration speech in Portland, Maine.
He was adamant on stopping refugees from ‘terrorist nations’ to enter the United States. To back up his claim, he cited the cases of refugees from Somalia who have entered Maine and allegedly caused problems.
He also said that the efforts to resettle the Somali refugees were “having the unintended consequence of creating an enclave of immigrants with high unemployment that is both stressing the state’s safety net and creating a rich pool of potential recruiting targets for Islamist terror groups.”
Aside from the Philippines, he also labeled Afghanistan, Iraq, Morocco, Pakistan, Somalia, Syria, Uzbekistan, and Yemen as ‘terrorist nations’.
Several officials have spoken out and criticized his reckless and ignorant statement.
According to Senator Brian Schatz, “Donald Trump’s latest rant suggesting we ban immigration from countries like the Philippines that are helping us fight terrorism is another example of his reckless rhetoric that’s based on fear and division and further proves he is unfit to lead our country.”
It is ironic, however, that he tagged the Philippines as such because he has a major real estate investment in the country according to Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar.
“In fact, Mr. Trump has even professed his love for the Philippines during the launch of his 57-storey luxury apartment in Makati,” Andanar said. Trump, during the event, allegedly said that he has always loved the Philippines and he thinks that Manila is one of Asia’s most spectacular cities. ASCS
