Thousands evacuated to avoid floods due to non-stop rains

Rainy season is upon us again and for most, this means evacuating. On Saturday, 3,300 people were evacuated as more monsoons brought about rain in Luzon and Western Visayas until next week.

The thousands are to temporarily spent the night on straw mats in eight different evacuation centers in  Bagong Silangan village, Quezon City. Some opted to covered courts in San Mateo town in Rizal province.


Authorities have issued warnings of flood in the capital and surrounding suburbs after heavy rains persisted for sever days, causing the La Mesa Dam to almost reach overflow level (0.11 meter below its overflow level of 80.05). The eight floodgates at the Marikina river were open.

Meanwhile, in Bulacan province, the residents of Calumpit and Hagonoy towns have already been alrted of possible evacuation upon the opening of at least one gate of the Ipo Dam.

State weather bureau said that a tropical storn and a weather system east of Luzon will not make landfall but will rather stir the southwest monsoon. This means more rains in the country for the next three to five days.
Flash floods have hit busy streets in the capital while several villages in Pampanga province were submerged in knee-deep to waist-deep floods.

Two teenagers died in Manila after a firewall collapsed under heavy rains overnight. A man in Marina Village in Quezon City was also killed due to a wall collapse.

“Maging handa po tayo. Maging alerto tayo sa mabababang lugar na prone sa landslide at flash flood,” advised by the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). ASCS
