On Friday, Davao Mayor Sara Duterte expressed her intentions to pursue justice for the death of a 3-year-old boy who was killed by his own stepfather.

According to Duterte during her visit to Kean Gabriel Agustin’s wake, she will hire a private prosecutor—whom she will pay herself—to pursue charges against the suspect and to ensure that justice will be served.

Based on the investigation of the Talomo police station, Agustin died when his stepfather left him hanging inside an empty sack for hours inside their shanty on Wednesday.

According to Supt. Grecel Sagpang, the sack has fallen to the ground several times but the 22-year old stepfather sat on him instead of helping him. The parents only brought the kid to the barangay heath center when he stopped moving. They reported to the health workers that the boy drowned.

The couple also went to village chair Carmelo Arena for help but when he was told of what really happened, Arena arrested them instead.

The stepfather said he was just punishing the boy because of mischief. He also admitted that it was not the first time he forcibly put him inside an empty sack.

A murder complaint has been filed against him and a complaint for parricide for the mother.

“We came in too late. We can no longer save Kean,” Duterte told the boy’s grandfather. She called on to the Davaoenos to “report all abuses against children, cases of rape.” ASCS
