On Tuesday,
Philippine Vice President Leni Robredo received the prestigious “Most
Influential Filipina Woman of the World Award” from Filipina Women’s Network
(FWN), a non-government organization.
Robredo
received the said award during the 13th Filipina Leadership Global
Sumit in Cebu, where she also served as the keynote speaker.
The award
given to her was under the “Nicole” category, which “honors Filipino women
whose words, actions, and activism inspire others to act and revolutionize
society’s way of understanding traditional beliefs and customs, thus leaving
behind a Filipino global imprint.”
As the
keynote speaker of the event, Robredo called on to the FWN members to
perpetuate women empowerment in order to change the society. According to her,
Filipinas today are more powerful, accomplished, emphatic, and socially aware
than before.
“We are not
here to rule the world. We are about creating the world where despots and
heroes are no longer needed, so that each one of us can be a hero.”
Women
empowerment is one of the five areas that are in the priority of the Office of
the Vice President. The others are hunger and food security, rural development,
education, and public health.
She
disclosed that one of her strategies is giving women power over their ability
to earn a living. Despite this, she admitted that her office doesn’t have that
much funding.
“But in
this work, we have discovered that it is not the money per se that can
transform society. It is transparency, trust, and governance.”
“It is the
ability to convene and inspire. It is the mandate to step back, look at the
gaps and figure out how to maximize our joint resources to fill up those gaps.
It is clarity of vision and focus,” she added.
