President Rodrigo R. Duterte deserves to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, an organization said.
In an article by MindaVote, the emerging online media organization based in Mindanao said Duterte, for his efforts to simultaneously end both the communist insurgency and the Muslim separatist movement in the Philippines hopefully within the first one hundred days of his leadership, is but worthy of such award.
"This is a feat that no other Philippine leader has even come close to doing in the past forty years. It is a dream that many Filipinos have all but thought impossible until Duterte came into the picture," read the post.
Duterte has been firm in his vow of bringing peace with groups waging equally bloody wars with the Philippine government for the past four decades. Ghe President even said that he is willing to walk an extra mile just to attain peace especially in Mindanao, which has been his long dream.
The war, is believed to have claimed thousands of lives and "has torn apart the social fabric of uncounted communities."
It can be noted that even days before his oath, Duterte brought the leaders of both the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) to the table to discuss peace.
"This marks a significant milestone for in the road to peace in Mindanao, as both groups have often been at loggerheads on how to deal with the government. In fact, this estrangement between the MNLF and the MILF was one of the major stumbling blocks in ex-President Aquino’s Bangsamoro Basic Law initiative," it said.
"On the side of the communist New People’s Army, which is recognized as Asia’s longest running insurgency and one of the world’s deadliest, Duterte has not only released several long-held political prisoners, but also declared a unilateral ceasefire to jump start the peace process," it added.
It is believed that Duterte’s peace efforts "have gone largely unnoticed among the local and international media outfits. Their attentions are firmly fixed on his controversial anti-crime initiatives. This for them is the only “war story” that matters."
But for ordinary Filipinos, the post said, "particularly those living in and around the combat zones, the coming peace is the biggest story of all, a story that matters." AJRSP
