Prisoners in jail cells receive three meals worth a total of fifty pesos a day.

Surprised by the funding for inmates, Senator Loren Legarda called for a higher budget allocation for the inmates at the budget briefing with the Department of Justice officials on Thursday.

Legarda who serves as the chair of the Senate committee on finance, broached the idea of raising the budget proposal for prison food from the current P50 to P75 a day for each prisoner.

“How does a person eat three meals a day with P50? That’s too small. Let’s have a more humane rate,” she said.

Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II agreed, saying food supplied to prisoners were no better than animal feed.

He said he wished for sufficient funds to provide better meals for the inmates.

“The government has such a huge budget. We should be feeding them humane food even while they are in prison,” Legarda said.

the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor), which houses 44,790 inmates across the country, is under the DOJ.

From Duterte’s war on drugs, more inmates are expected to arrive. As of Aug. 22, Philippine National Police data showed 673,978 surrendered users and pushers from July 1, and 11,784 arrests within the same period.

“Actually, the P50 has been the rate … but actually, we hope to increase it to P75 per day. We are going to conduct a bidding in this regard,” Aguirre said in reponse to Legarda’s question if the rate has been increased. MJM
