Only hundreds attend anti-burial rally
Only hundreds of people showed up at the protest rally against the burial of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. It was a non-partisan citizens’ assembly that was participated by lawmakers, student groups, and advocacy groups.
Their main goal was to deliver the message that Marcos is not a hero, and they did this through different protest paraphernalia such as banners, placards, dislike signs, mock laser swords (inspired by the Japanese TV Series ‘Voltes V’ which was ordered to be taken off air by the Marcos regime for its rebellious message), and umbrellas.
Among the attendees was Senator Risa Hontiveros. She called Marcos an “unrepentant enemy of our heroes”.
“We would be the laughing stock of the entire planet,” Hontiveros added. She disclosed that she has already filed a Senate resolution opposing the President’s move to give Marcos a hero’s burial.
Meanwhile, militant labor group Partido ng Manggagawa urged the Marcos to “move on” and bury the former dictator in Ilocos Norte, in his hometown. “The former dictator ruthlessly ruled and divided this nation for over two decades, thus, his burial at Libingan can never be considered a unifying action.”
Bobby Tanada, who served as a human rights lawyer during the Martial Law, spoke before the crowd and also expressed that Marcos be buried in Ilocos.
The participants were told beforehand to wear white to signify unity and being non-partisan even just for a day, but some came wearing yellow—as also worn by those who attended the EDSA revolution that put an end to the Marcos regime.
The organizers, the Coalition Against Marcos Burial in the Libingan ng mga Bayani (CAMB-LNMB), were confident that they were able to gather 7,000 signatures through the program.
Despite the protests, President Duterte is undeterred. “You need only to be a president and a soldier. We are not debating about heroes here. That’s the law. We cannot go out of the law,” he said.
However, findings of the National Historical Commission show that Marcos faked his military records during World War 2, a move that highly questions his legitimacy to be buried in the Libingan ng mga Bayani. ASCS
