On Monday, the White House announced that U.S. President Barack Obama is set to meet with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on September 6. They are planning to talk about human rights and security concerns, among other things.
“We absolutely expect that the president will raise concerns about some of the recent statements from the president of the Philippines,” said White House Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes.
However, Rhodes said that there are also important security issues to tackle such as the tension regarding the navigation in the South China Sea. An international court has ruled that Manila has the rights to its claims in the South China Sea, as opposed to China and other claimants.
The said meeting will take place in Laos, where the two will attend a summit of leaders from Pacific Rim nations. ASCS
