Age indeed didn’t matter for Rod, a 63-year old inmate who persevered to finish his elementary education under the Alternative Learning System (ALS) by the Department of Education (DepEd).

Rod hails from Barangay Culipapa in Negros Occidental. He was grinning from ear to ear as he walked up to the stage to receive his diploma during the graduation ceremony at the Metro Bacolod District Jail.

Before his incarceration, he was only able to finish third grade. Fortunately, he was able to enrol under the ALS program and finish his elementary education.

He was the only inmate who graduated from elementary. The other 18 graduated from high school.

According to Chief Inspector Jonairy Sitchon, the warden of the Metro Bacolod District Jail, the partnership with the DepEd and the bureau has long been existing to help inmates who were not able to finish their studies.
