President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday evening discussed the government’s proposed tax reform with seven senators he invited to the Malacañang Palace State Dining Room.

These senators were Ralph Recto, Alan Peter Cayetano, Cynthia Villar, Joseph Victor Ejercito, Joel Villanueva, Juan Miguel Zubiri, and Richard Gordon.

Along with the senators were Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez, Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, and Special Assistant to the President Christopher Go.

There will be a overhaul on the current tax system.

In a text message from Villanueva, he said Dominguez presented to him and his colleagues the administration’s plan on the changes to be done on the present system.

"[I] am actually glad he's supporting our call to lower corporate and personal income taxes, including other tax measures [I] am pursuing," he said.

Lowering taxes is one of the many promises that the President gave. In his first State of the Nation Address, he assured the people that he would focus on lowering personal and corporate taxes as part of his promises during the campaign period.

The motion to lower taxes has been rejected by Duterte’s predecessor, President Benigno Aquino III. MJM
