Larry Gadon, a lawyer and defeated senatorial candidate in the 2016 elections, called on Senator Leila de Lima on Saturday to resign as chairperson of the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights.
Gardon in a press conference in Quezon City said that de Lima is no longer credible for the job. Rumors of her involvement with illegal drug trade along with allegations of illicit affairs have made her credibility questionable.
“Ako ay isa sa mga nanawagan na sana ay mag-resign na siya as chairman of the justice committee sapagkat nagkaroon na ng cloud ang kanyang credibility,” Gadon said.
The lawyer who also served former president and now re-elected Pampanga Representative Gloria Arroyo, said that as chairperson, de Lima can influence the appointment of the members of the judiciary.
Chairpersons of the Senate and the House of Representatives’ respective justice committees automatically sit as members of the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC), which recommends candidates for metropolitan and regional trial courts, Sandiganbayan, Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court.

“Kung ang isang miyembro ng Judicial and Bar Council ay merong cloud or pagdududa sa kanyang credibilidad…Hindi 'yan magiging maganda sa pag-a-administer ng justice dito sa mga nasasangkot sa illegal drugs,” he said.
President Rodrigo Duterte has been throwing these accusations to De Lima himself, and the senator denied everything.
Gadon said his plea was not because he believed De Lima was guilty of the allegations but because the JBC needs to be spared from doubts and controversy.
“Napakarami kasing bakante ngayon [na judicial positions]. Kung ang mga ma-appoint diyan ay may utang na loob dun sa mga taong nasasangkot dito sa usapin o kontrobersya ng drug ay mababahiran din ng pagdududa ang magiging resulta ng ating judicial process,” Gadon said.
“Magiging kadudaduda ang magiging appointment dahil ang nag rerekomenda ay maaring may ulterior motive. Maaring makasira sa tiwala ng tao with this current administration,” he added. MJM
