During the coverage of former President Benigno Aquino III’s last SONA, there was a split-screen video showing three presidential candidates—Jejomar Binay, Grace Poe, and Mar Roxas.

Little did they know, then Davao City Mayor and now President Rogrigo Duterte was also watching at the People’s Park in Davao City, on a monobloc chair—far from the flair and elegance at the event.

He was watching Aquino’s last SONA while he was on standby for an interview with a news channel.

The photo went viral as netizens retold the story of how Duterte was a reluctant candidate at first, but ultimately had a landslide victory against other presidential candidates who have long since expressed their intentions to run.

According to Duterte in an interview last July 727, the economy flourished during the Aquino administration but criminality and especially illegal drugs were not suppressed.

He said that he didn’t hear any concrete program about criminality, although there was about corruption. He gave Aquino a grade of 7 out of 10 for his performance during his term from 2010 to 2015.

Moreover, Duterte was disappointed that Aquino continued to blame the former administration during his last SONA. “Past is past. He should have focused on what to continue at the end of his term,” he said.

After his first SONA, Duterte has been quoted many times in his speech: We cannot move forward if we allow the past to pull us back. Finger-pointing is not the way. […] That is why I will not waste precious time dwelling on the sins of the past or blaming those who are perceived to be responsible for the mess that we are in and suffering from. | ASCS
