After the Philippines won the arbitration case against China over maritime disputes, President Rodrigo Duterte immediately called a meeting.
According to the media advisory, the Palace said that Cabinet meeting would be at Malacanang at 6PM.
Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar has informed that the UN ruling would be one of the agenda to be discussed in the meeting, and that Solicitor General Jose Calida would study the decision.
“We shall wait for SolGen’s interpretation of the ruling,” he said. Calida shall be the one to provide the President a synopsis of the ruling and a complete and thorough interpretation in 5 days.
Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella also said before making any public statement, the government would first study the decision.
“Everything will have to be subject to a discussion. After all, it’s going to be a lengthy decision and there will be a number of details that need to be properly threshed out before any statement—any decision is made publicly,” Abella said.
He added that the national interest would be a top priority with regards to considering the next step of the government.
The tribunal issues its ruling on Tuesday, in favour of the Philippines.
The statement said, “The Tribunal concluded that there was no legal basis for China to claim historic rights to resources within the sea areas falling within the ‘nine-dash line.”
It also declared that certain sea areas are within the exclusive economic zone of the Philippines. | ASCS - FNPH
