Duterte asks solons to bring back death penalty

In yet another daring move, President Rogrigo Duterte, on July 9, has asked his Congressional allies in Davao to revive the death penalty.

Among the lawmakers present in the meeting were senators Alan Peter Cayetano, Sonny Angara, Masbate 3rd District Representative Scott Davies Lanete, and Citizenz’ Batte Against Corruption (CIBAC) Representative Sherwin Tugna.

Angara said that it was a casual gathering where they, with some officials, discussed many things. He also said that Duterte showed them Davao’s emergency center including their crime and traffic management system.

In addition, the president also asked them to pass around the proposed measure reimposing the death penalty.

“The president mentioned he thought we should bring back the death penalty especially for drug traffickers,” Angara said. Many public officials are also involved in illegal drugs and it is a form of treason as they should be the protectors of the Filipino people, he added.

Presumptive speaker Pantaleon Alvarez and newly elected senator Manny Pacquiao have already filed bills that back up the president’s request to revive the death penalty.

Angara, however, remains to be non-committal on the issue. “I’m open to listen to the proposals which have been put forward,” he said.

Long before, Duterte has already told his allies that he prefers death penalty by hanging to lethal injections. This has drawn criticisms from human rights advocates.

Amnesty International and other human rights groups have asserted that the imposition of capital punishment deters crime is not supported by any evidence.
